Cincinnati is firing head coach Wes Miller, according to multiple reports. In five seasons with the Bearcats (two in the AAC, three in the Big 12), Miller compiled a 100-74 overall record and failed to reach the NCAA Tournament. The program went 18-15 this season and is expected to land on the wrong side of the bubble on Selection Sunday.
According to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander, the plan is for the separation to go official on Apr. 1, when Miller’s buyout drops from $9.9 million to $4.7 million. The “presumed frontrunner” to replace him is current Utah State coach Jerrod Calhoun.
The Bearcats hit the 20-win mark just twice under Miller (2023, 2024). Since joining the Big 12 in 2023, they have gone 23-33 in league play and never placed better than seventh.
There were high hopes for this year’s team following the signings of a few prominent transfers. Cincinnati struggled during nonconference play and got off to a slow start in the Big 12 before surging late. Despite winning seven of their last nine regular-season games, including victories over UCF, Kansas, Oklahoma State and BYU, the Bearcats are not projected to receive a bid to the Big Dance, according to Hoops HQ Bracketologist Brad Wachtel. They were knocked out of the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday, losing a 66-65 overtime thriller to UCF.
Miller joined Cincinnati in 2021 following a decade at UNC Greensboro. During his tenure, the Spartans won four Southern regular-season titles and made two NCAA Tournament appearances.
