Arizona State is finalizing a five-year deal to hire Randy Bennett as its new head coach, reports ESPN’s Jeff Borzello and Pete Thamel.

Bennett, 63, has been the coach at Saint Mary’s since 2001. Amid a remarkable run, he guided the program to seven WCC regular-season titles and 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, compiling a 589-228 record and claiming WCC Coach of the Year honors seven times. The Gaels have won at least 26 games and reached the Big Dance in each of the past five seasons. As a No. 7 seed in this year’s tourney, they were knocked out in the first round by No. 10 Texas A&M.

An Arizona native, Bennett is moving back home to replace Bobby Hurley, whose contract was not renewed. In 11 years at the helm, Hurley accumulated a 185-167 record and led the Sun Devils to three NCAA Tournaments. Arizona State has struggled since joining the Big 12 in 2024, finishing 15th in the league last year and 11th this season.

Associate head coach Mickey McConnell is expected to take over for Bennett at Saint Mary’s, according to ESPN. McConnell played for the Gaels from 2007-11 and has been on Bennett’s staff since 2019.
