LOS ANGELES — Five-star prospect Brandon McCoy, a consensus top-five prospect in the 2025 high school class, is transferring to Sierra Canyon High school in Chatsworth, Ca., Hoops HQ has learned. The 6-foot-5 point guard played his junior year at St. John Bosco in Bellflower and averaged 15.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game.

Sierra Canyon gained much recent notoriety as the school where Bronny James played. The list of the school’s NBA alumni includes Scotty Pippen Jr., Marvin Bagley III and Ziaire Williams. The Trailblazers finished last season with a 27-7 record. Head coach Andre Chevalier will be entering his ninth season as head coach and the Trailblazers are expected to be one of the top teams in the country this season. McCoy will be joining four-star wing Maximo Adams, who was one of the biggest risers in the senior class over the summer.

No official reason was given for the transfer, although it is not uncommon for players to switch high schools just before the start of the academic year. Ryan Hampton, a five-star wing Texas, transferred this week as well to DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Adams and McCoy were teammates at Mamba League Invitational this past weekend in downtown Los Angeles, where they took home the championship. McCoy was the player of the game during the semifinals, leading all players with 19 points. Adams finished with eight points in the championship game. McCoy’s athleticism was on full display as he showcased windmill dunks in transition and hit a couple step-back threes.

“It means a lot to represent and play with the Mamba mentality and just with everything that Kobe Bryant played with,” McCoy said after the semifinals game. “It’s just an honor to be here and have this be the last event of the summer, there’s nothing like it.”

McCoy recently won a gold medal with Team USA at the U19 FIBA World Cup and he was the third-leading scorer at Nike’s EYBL Peach Jam, averaging 22 points and 6.4 rebounds per game for AZ Unity.

McCoy’s recruitment is wide open and he intends to take his time throughout the process. Duke, Arkansas, Alabama, USC, UCLA, Miami, Kentucky, Kansas, Baylor and others are involved with the No. 1 guard in the class.

“He has great positional size and looks much stronger and more confident with the ball in his hands,” one NBA scout told Hoops HQ. “He’s becoming more of a two-way threat and has a high ceiling as a combo guard at the NBA level.”
