Alabama’s Aden Holloway, a 6-foot-1 junior guard, was arrested on Monday morning on a charge of first degree possession of marijuana, which is a felony in the state of Alabama, a Tuscaloosa police spokesperson told AL.com’s Nick Kelly.
The spokesperson said that agents with the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force recovered more than a pound of marijuana, paraphernalia and cash. Holloway was also charged with “failure to affix a tax stamp” and taken to the Tuscaloosa County Jail. He was released after posting a $5,000 bond.
“The University is aware of the allegations and is working to gather more information,” UA said in a statement. “The student has been removed from campus pending further investigation by the UA Office of Student Conduct.”
Alabama is preparing to play without Holloway in the NCAA Tournament. The No. 4-seeded Tide will meet No. 13 Hofstra on Friday at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa.
“We got standards in our program and we’ve got ways we’ve held our guys accountable. And we try to keep everything in-house. Obviously some of the situations you can’t, and this is one of those,” Alabama coach Nate Oats said on his radio show on Monday. “We found out about what was going on this morning. I guess it all went down this morning. And we had to suspend him pending the investigation… We’re certainly disappointed in his behavior. But that being said, we still love him, he’s still our guy. We’re helping him get the help that he needs and we’re going to continue to help him whatever way we can. But as far as our team goes, I thought we had a great practice. We’re preparing to play without him this weekend.”
In his second season with the Tide, Holloway is averaging 16.8 points, 3.8 assists and 2.8 rebounds while shooting 48.1 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from three. He is the team’s second-leading scorer behind 6-foot-4 sophomore guard Labaron Philon.
Holloway spent his freshman season at Auburn before transferring to UA in 2024. Last year, he helped the Tide advance all the way to the Elite Eight.
